Nightmares, Hope and a small bit of Truth 2/2

"Samantha it's you." He grabbed her hand, terrified of letting go, afraid that if he did she'd disappear.

"Fox, what are you talking about? My name is Emma. Who is Samantha?" She could read the emotions in his eyes so clearly. Fear and joy were mingling with his tears. Those eyes... She knew them. She glanced down at the manuscript on the table, back to Fox's eyes, and grabbed her locket. The dreams came flooding in on her. The murky images that had haunted her for years, become clear. She saw Fox. Through her tears, she saw her brother.

Her memory came back in a flash, one so painful she had to gasp for air. She remembered, remembered it all.

"I remember. Oh god, Fox, I remember."

******
"How is she, Mulder?"

"She is finally asleep. She is so afraid of having more nightmares. Scully, I don't know what to tell her to make them go away."

"She'll be o.k.. Mulder, look at all she has been through, she is a survivor like you." Mulder sat down next to her on the couch. Tears that he had held back for hours finally began to fall.

"Scully, she's back. Samantha is back." The reality of the past few hours hit him full force, tears became sobs. Sobs of relief, of regret and of rage consumed him. Scully pulled him into her arms.

"Fox..." No words would matter now. She held him tighter, all the time wanting to take all of his pain away, but knowing that she never could.

******
Samantha stood in the doorway of the bedroom and watched Fox and Dana. She knew from her dreams the depth of feeling that they held for each other. She had not realized until she remembered who she was that the people that she was dreaming of was Fox and Dana. She had seen parts of their lives for months now. Not wanting to disturb them she returned to the bedroom. Sitting on the bed, she wondered what was to happen next. Her entire life had been altered in just a few hours. Her logical mind told her that she should not believe this, but her heart told her otherwise. She knew deep within her soul that the man in the other room was the brother she had lost twenty-two years ago.

******
Mulder reluctantly pulled away from Scully's embrace. He looked into her tear-stained eyes and smiled.

"Scully, your nose is red." He smiled a smile that reached to his eyes. That smile-- it had been so long since she had seen it.

"You don't look so good yourself. Why don't you go and get us something to drink and I'll check on Samantha."

"Scully.... Thank you for believing in me all this time. If you had not I might have given up on ever finding her."

She smiled and gently laid her hand on his check. "That's what I am here for, Mulder."

******
Scully opened the door slowly and was surprised to see Samantha sitting on the bed.

"You know if Mulder came in here, he would be furious."

"Mulder... Why do you call him Mulder and not Fox?"

"Well, he has never liked anyone to call him Fox."

"Oh, he never told me not to call him Fox. Should I call him Mulder?"

"NO, I think that you're part of the reason he wants to be called Mulder. Fox reminds him of you. You do know that he has never given up the hope that one day he would find you. You are the most important thing in the world to him. I hope you know that."

"I'm not the only thing that is important to him, so are you. He depends on you doesn't he? I know so much about both of you without ever realizing who it was."

"You mean through the dreams you had. Tell me about them. What was the last one that you had about?"

Samantha pulled the pillow that she held closer to her. The nightmares, she thought of the last one. The visions of this one had not subsided. She saw a fire sweeping through a closed in structure and the man with the eyes that haunted her running from it. The man with the hazel eyes. Terror gripped her soul as she realized the man who had touched the hand of death was her brother.

"Oh my god, Fox."

"Samantha what is it, what did you remember?"

Fox came running into the room. Terror filled his eyes at the thought of Samantha in danger.

"Samantha."

"I'm ok, really. I was just remembering the nightmares. It's just that I realized what you both have gone through. I am so sorry."

"I want to tell you both what I have dreamed about your lives and then the two of you can fill me in on what I missed."

Mulder and Scully glanced at each other. The same thought when through both of their minds. Who was going to tell her that it was her own father that was responsible for her abduction?

******
Much later, Scully and Mulder sat in her bedroom trying to absorb all that Samantha had told them.

"How could she know all that she does, Mulder?"

"I don't know, Scully. May be she made some kind of connection to me over the years, and now that my life is in such chaos the connection is stronger. It could be possible, Scully. Don't give me that look. It's her. I know it's her."

"Mulder, she just knows so much. It's just well.... scary."

Scully wanted to believe. More that anything she wanted this to be Samantha. What scared her so was that she knew so much about their lives. All of the traumatic events that Mulder and her had been through she knew them. She thought back to earlier that night when Samantha had told them of her dreams.

"Most of the nightmares that I had were images that I wrote a story around. The images never made much sense to me and the faces of most of the people I saw were distorted. That is all but the eyes. May be you can explain to me what I have really been seeing. O.K., here goes."

She looked at both of them took a deep breath and began.

"It all began with a small disfigured fetus. It was in a container. I saw a man taking it from you I think Dana. When he went to give it to some one else he was murdered. A man, Fox, that was you, was thrown out of the back of a van. Dana, you checked them both, and the man who was shot told you to 'Trust no one'."

Scully and Mulder were shocked beyond speech, they only glanced at each other and waited for Samantha to continue.

"O.k, the next image was of Dana being taken away and of a small gold cross. Does the cross mean anything to either of you? I could never figure that one out."

Scully was still finding speech a difficult process so Mulder answered her, "The cross belongs to Scully, that was what was left behind when she was taken" "Oh I am sorry, If this is br

inging back too many painful memories, I can stop." Scully's thoughts finally found their voice, "No, continue."

"Then next few were images and nothing more, I saw Dana, in a hospital room, a group of women that all looked the same, and Dana in a room with an incinerator and dead bodies. The last two nightmares were the most disturbing. I saw Fox, in a uncontrollable rage, a man being shot in a shower by someone dressed in black, Dana shooting Fox, and Fox in a metal room running from fire. Keep in mind I am assuming that the two people I have been dreaming about were you two. Now, Dana, could you please explain why you shot Fox.?"

"It's a long story Samantha. A very long one."

******
Scully knew what scared her and Mulder both was something he would never put into words for fear that very act would make it true. Despite that fear she had to make him admit the possibility however slight that this was a cruel trick.

"Mulder, what if this is Cancerman's way of hurting you again? What if he sent her?"

When Mulder's eyes met hers they were filled with barley contained rage. That rage slowly gave way to fear. Fear that Scully was right.

"Scully..."

"Mulder, I know you want this to be Samantha by all chances she is, but you have to be sure.

"Scully, if this is not her. I don't think..."

"I know Mulder, I know."

She held his hand and waited for the fear to subside. It broke her heart to see him ride this roller coaster of emotion. He could go from rage to joy in seconds. Exhaustion wasn't helping either.

"You need to sleep. Mulder, how long has it been since you really slept?"

"I don't know, it's been a while. I'm fine."

"Come on, you sleep and I stay up. Just in case....."

She pulled him up from the couch and led him to the bedroom.

"Want to join me Scully?"

He grinned, it was a Mulder grin. One of his grins that made her heart beat a little faster.

"I'm afraid your too tired for me, Mulder."

"Oh, Scully."

"Go to sleep"

"Scully, her dreams, they stopped with the boxcar and New Mexico. Maybe finding her and remembering her past stopped them. Don't you think?"

"I hope your right. I hope she didn't dream about your dad."

"Me to Scully, me to."

"Good night, Mulder."

As she walked out the door, she wiped away a tear that she had fought to hold back.

*I hope you are right, Fox. I hope she never has to know what her father did*

******
Scully sat staring at the bedroom door where Samantha slept. Even if she had wanted to she could not sleep. The same thoughts kept running over and over again in her mind.

*What if this was not Samantha, and what if Cancerman was behind this*

She knew that Mulder would never agree to any testing, but she had to know. She could not let Mulder bear his soul to someone sent to destroy him. Especially since it had happened before. She thought back to the time he gave up his "sister" to save her life. Guilt played at the corners of her heart over what he had done for her. He had given his away the very thing he had sought for his life for, just to save her life. She thought Mulder stopped long ago believing that the women was Samantha. If this Samantha turned out to be a trick, it would kill Mulder. That would be the catalyst to his downfall; he would never recover from that. If there was any part of him that doubted her it was too small to matter. This was something that only she could do.

******
Scully knocked softly at the bedroom door. Part of her was praying that no one would answer.

"Come in"

Scully took a deep breath and tried to slow her racing heart as she opened the door.

"Samantha, am I disturbing you?"

"No, I couldn't sleep. Is something wrong?"

"No, nothing is wrong. I need to ask you something."

Scully sat on the edge of the bed. Sheer determination was all that kept her from running from this room. She had to know this for Mulder's sake, she had to know. She tried not to think about what Mulder would do if he found out what she was doing.

"Dana, what is it? What do you want to know?"

She took a deep breath and blurted her question out before she lost her nerve.

"Will you have a blood test to confirm that you are Samantha?" Scully forced her self to look at Samantha.

"Dana, do you think I am not Samantha."

"I know that my heart thinks you are. I am the one who always pulls Mulder back to the ground. When he is off on one of his wild ideas, I try to pull him back to earth. This time no matter what I want to believe, I have to be the one on the ground. I can not bear the thought of Mulder being hurt, not after all he has been through. If by some awful chance this is a trick, I would make the person responsible pay for hurting him. "

"You, would, wouldn't you. Fox, means that much to you?"

"Yes, after all that we have been through ... the person responsible would pay dearly."

"I'll take whatever tests you want. I have no memory of what happened to me since I was eight. The only memories I have are from the past five years. I doubt that I ever will remember what happened to me, but I know with al my heart I am Samantha."

Tears of relief filled Scully's eyes. She only hoped that this would not backfire on her.

"Thank you, Samantha. Thank you."

"Do you want to tell, Fox?"

"Not yet, Mulder would be quite upset with me if he knew I even asked this of you."

"Well, he should not be. You care a great deal about him, I am glad."

Scully got up to leave and Samantha stopped her.

"Just so you know and please don't tell Fox. I remember more than I told him. I remember what our father did. That he choose me rather that Fox." Scully was so shocked she could not speak. "Please do not tell him I know. It would hurt him too much."

******
"Mulder, I'm not having this discussion with you. There are no invading cockroaches from outer space. Drop it." She knew he wouldn't. He was so happy he could barely sit still. Luckily the week since Samantha had been with them was devoted to paperwork so Mulder's distraction was not a problem.

*Except when he started on his invading cockroach theory.*

"But Scully... You didn't see them."

"May I remind you that you only saw a few not billions. There are no invading cockroaches. Drop it."

"But Scully..." She gave him that look, the one when he knew it was time to stop. His next retort was interrupted by the telephone.

"Scully"

Mulder glanced up at Scully, her face had lost all of its color and she had an expression he had never seen on her before. It was uncertainty.

"Are you sure there is no doubt"

Mulder could see the shimmer of tears in her eyes that she was holding back.

"Thank You."

Mulder watched as she slowly hung up the phone, all the time her eyes never left his.

"Scully, what's wrong" he asked as got up from his desk and knelt down next to her. He reached out and turned her towards him. The tears that she had been holding back began to fall down her face.

"Dana..."

He reached out and touched her face, uncertain of what she would allow him to do. She stood up from her chair quickly almost knocking Mulder to the floor. "I've have to go..."

"Dana, wait," he grabbed her arm before she could get to the door, "what is wrong, you can tell me."

"Fox..." She could not stop crying as much as she tried a week's worth of tears would not be stopped. She went to him, needing to be close to him. She held onto him so tightly. So afraid that once she told him what she had done that he would never forgive her. The thought of losing him losing his trust she realized was devesting to her. She had allowed herself to depend on him, she needed him beside her when it felt as if the world was against them. She could not lose him now she needed him too much.

"Fox," she could not bear to look into his eyes, so she talked into his chest, "I did something you will never forgive me for, but I had too for you I had to." He pushed her forward enough so that he could see her face. "I asked Samantha to take a blood test to make sure that she was your sister. I know I should have told you, but I had to know. I could not stand the thought of this all being a trick at your expense. I...."

"Dana, is she? Is she my sister?"

*Oh, Dana. Please say she is please.*

"Yes, Fox. She is Samantha."

Scully saw the tears in his eyes that made hers fall even harder. He pulled her against him, "Thank you, Dana. Thank you."
