Disclaimer:
Just a note to everyone.. yes I am writing again. This only took me 2 months to finish. For everyone's
information the woman, Elizabeth, in this story is NOT Mrs. Mulder. Since CC has seen it fit to not give her a first name
I wanted to make that clear. She is just a woman with somewhat strange taste as you will see. The concept of X-Files belongs
to CC and 1013 Production, not me. If so, well Cancerman would be forever revered as the wonderful man he is. And the
poor guy would have a name too.
Blood Red Rubies

The glass globe floated before him. He reached out a finger to touch the delicate glass but as light as his
touch was the glass shattered beneath it. He watched with fascination as the pieces of glass fluttered to the ground, bits of
it landing on his hand. A bare light bulb hanging from the ceiling cast a incandescent glow on the fragments that now littered
the floor. He glanced at his hand, the smaller pieces bit into the flesh as he brushed them off. Small welts of blood appeared
in their wake.
He hated the globe. Hated it for its delicately. For it's very nature was fragile and vulnerable.
* The glass shouldn't have broken. *
He thought to himself as he walked away, while unnoticed small drops of blood fell to the floor.
* It shouldn't have broken. *
*******
Turning to his side, he pushed away the blankets. The dream was back, with all its clarity, it had come again
to haunt him. To remind him of the frailties of life, and of his own failures. He could still feel the glass as he wiped it off
his hand. The feel of the small slivers as they embedded themselves in his hand. He buried his head in the pillows, hoping to
block out the site of that globe and the memories that were sure to follow the dream. He could still remember the feel of the
glass beneath his touch. The way it felt when it shattered, and with the disintegrated of the glass his life as he had dreamed
it would be died. So many nights since then, so many nights spent alone. Spent dreaming of her.
* I shouldn't do this, * he thought as he allowed his thoughts to wander to the past. He could see her before him, as she was
the last time he saw her. Her black hair, deep green eyes.....
* Elizabeth * He mumbled as he was pulled into the past.
******
"Liz." he called as he walked into the room, "Are you here?"
No sounds emanated from the room. He could feel his heart quicken in his chest.
* She's gone * He thought to himself. It was a fear that followed him from this house everyday, that when he came home she
would be gone.
Walking into the bedroom he knew his worst fear had become reality. She had left him. Sitting on the bed he
saw the note laying on his pillow. The simple flow of her writing graced the surface of the paper. His name written, seemed
harsh and foreign to him. Holding it in his hands, again the name etched into his mind. His name. There was no denying that
the words contained within where for him and him alone. He could not pass this away for another to deal with, for another to
feel the pain. It was his and his alone to bear.
Sliding a finger along the flap of the envelope he opened it. Sliding the single sheet out, he drew in a ragged
breath as he opened the letter and again was faced with her beautiful writing. His throat began to constrict, tears he would
never cry froze in his eyes. For a moment, they blurred the image before him. The words were there, he could see them...
reading them. Putting them into coherent thought was so hard. His mind rebelled against what it knew was written upon
that page. Words that would tear apart the fragile world he had constructed. A world he needed... wanted....
He began unable to stop now, the words were there... he had to know... had to know the truth.
" My Dear,"
"I have tried to push aside the parts of your life that
frighten me, but I can't. Not any longer. You are in a
dangerous place, a deadly place. I can't live there with you
anymore. I am scared for you, but I need to feel safe again.
I love you and will always, but there is more at risk now than
just me. I will have this child and the baby will always know
of it's father. But we both know that you can never be the
father the child will need, you will not give up the world you
live in. And I can not bring up a child in that world of
darkness, lies and danger. Please respect this my dear, and
know that I love you."
Elizabeth
He crushed the paper in his hand. Tears burned in his eyes, tears he would never allow himself to cry. She
was gone, and with her a child he would never know. His heart ached, burned for her. She had been his last chance at
happiness at love... and he knew he could never give her what she wanted. Peace was not something he knew or would ever
have. She hadn't run from his shadow world until the baby. He wanted to hate it, to despise it for taking away her away
but he couldn't. It was a part of her and for that he would always love it.
He walked from the room, in the middle of the bed was the single sheet of paper, crumbled and discarded. He brought
a cigarette to his mouth, his hands shaking slightly as he lit it. Across the room, he saw the globe. The crystal globe he
had bought her. The light flickered and played along the glass. A myriad of colors filled the globe as sunlight hit at
every angle. Its beauty touched even his heart, he reached to touch it... but beneath his touch it shattered. Glass
filled the air, mingling with the dust and the sunbeams. He watched as the last part of her shattered before him.
The last bit of her he had left was corrupted and destroyed by his touch. As all had been that he had touched, he
destroyed it all.
He slid his hand along the table pushing the glass fragments away. Bringing his hand to his face he watched
as small droplets off blood formed on his hand. They slide slowly down his, forming on long flow of blood. His gaze was
transfixed on the small slivers of glass in his hand, they had the appearance of rubies. He smiled.
* Liz always loved rubies. * He thought.
The pain and the bitterness broke him. Tears he had never shed filled his eyes. Sliding to the floor he
buried his head in his hands, blood and tears combining in a sea of color.

Pulling himself from the bed, he sighed. The Pain was still there as strong as it had first been when she
left. After all these years, he still ached for her touch. Sometimes all he wanted was just to see her smile, a smile that had
warmed even his frozen heart. But with losing her, he had lost that glimmer of hope. A glimmer that he had tried to hold onto
for years, but at last with losing her he had lost it all.
The child. That too haunted his nights. Who was this child he had never seen. He didn't even know if it had
been a boy or a girl. He in honesty hadn't wanted to know. The knowledge he was sure would be used against him in some
way, it was better this way. His ignorance in this matter made his child much safer.
Lighting a cigarette and bringing it slowly to his mouth he began to push the memories back into the corner of
his mind. There he could control them.
******
Sitting at his desk, the ashtray overflowing with cigarette butts, he found his mind wandering back to the dream.
Back to the glass globe. When he closed his eyes, he could still see her before him, the smile on her lips, the way her hair fell
against her face... he could still see it all. A knock at the door, disrupted his memory.
"Yes." He called, the anger in his voice not hidden.
"Sir, this package came for you." the man said as he entered the dimly lite office. "It is clean."
Taking the small package he quickly opened the box. He could feel ice crystals form around his heart, as he looked
through the delicate papers and at the object within the box. A small glass globe taunted him. It was Elizabeth's globe.
His hands shook so badly he couldn't bring himself to touch the globe. Fear that he would break it again, consumed him.
"Who... What... Elizabeth" he cried.
